But you're having trouble with a used piece of hardware, so defintely throw everything but the kitchen sink at it to make sure it's ship shape. I have 4 Macs at home and two at work, and they require very little maintenance. Did you buy the computer from a reputable source? Does it run OK except for Avid? Does it really have only 4 gigs of space left? (That's bad.) How much RAM? Do a thorough diagnostic test to make sure you don't have a defective bit of hardware. If the computer you bought had an Apple Care Warranty, it should have come with a Tech Tool CD, which you boot from in order to run hardware diagnostics. Select your internal drive and click on Repair Drive. (Hold down the C key when starting up from the Apple Installer disk.) Don't install anything! Rather, use the pulldown to open up the Disk Utility from the installer. Your new computer is old, so it might be good to boot it up from the OS X installation disc and do a repair of the hard drive. #Buy diskwarrior software upgradeDon't let the automatic Software Upgrade install it!!! Since you're new to this, be aware that Quicktime 7 will screw up your Avid unless you go to Tiger and 4.8.1. It's the only maintenance tool you need to buy for a Mac. It's good to repair Permissions before and after any important installation.Īlso, there's a freeware app called Onyx that can do Permissions repair along with other useful maintenance tasks. You should put it in your Dock to keep it handy. Permission repair is part of Apple's Disk Utility application, which is in your Utilities Folder within the Applications Folder.
